PE and Sport

Statement of Intent

At Fountains Earth and St Cuthbert’s CE Primary School, we aim to provide a well-structured and progressive PE curriculum that develops children’s knowledge, skills and understanding so they can perform with increasing competence and confidence in a range of physical activities, including swimming and self-rescue in different water-based situations.

We want all children to experience a wide variety of sports and physical activities, which will promote a life-long love for physical exercise.

We aim to ensure that all pupils are engaged in regular activity for at least 30 minutes per day (including playtimes) in school and offer a broad range of sports and activities, including the opportunity to participate in competitive sport.
The high profile of PE and School Sport is used as a tool for whole school improvement across the federation. We provide children with opportunities to promote self-esteem through developing their physical competency in PE and sport, teaching them to cope with both success and failure in individual or team based physical activities.

Each year group from Year 1 to Year 6 has at least two hours of timetabled PE lessons every week. These may be indoor or outdoor. Our curriculum ensures that pupils’ skills develop through dance, invasion games, gymnastics, swimming, athletics and outdoor and adventurous activities. Carefully planned residential visits are a key feature of our outdoor education provision.
Swimming lessons are held at Nidderdale Swimming Pool. All Fountains Earth pupils swim for one term per year. Whilst at St Cuthbert’s, there is a particular focus on Year 3 and Year 4, with other year groups timetabled throughout the year.

Throughout the federation, our long-term plan for Physical Education and Sport is flexible so that it can be adapted to support our local area Inter-Schools competition calendar, run by the Harrogate Schools Sports Partnership. This provides our pupils with a wide range of opportunities for successful competition as well as festival-based events. This is key in teaching children how to cooperate and collaborate with others, as part of a team or competition, understanding fairness of play and good sportsmanship, and make connections between this and leading a healthy lifestyle.

Across the federation, we offer a wide range of after school sports clubs, such as Zumba, rugby, cricket, fencing and tennis. We also signpost children to a variety of sporting clubs and opportunities in the community. We celebrate PE with national and local events such as Sports Relief and the UCI Bike Race, and in-school Inspire Workshops. We strive to expand the range of opportunities and activities offered to pupils in order to give them a life-long love of physical exercise.

Fountains Earth has achieved Sports Mark Gold Award 2018-19 and Healthy Schools Silver Status in 2020 for Active Lifestyles and PSHE.
