Philosophy for Children (P4C)

Philosophy for Children, also known as P4C, is a great way of bringing children and adults together to generate and ask thoughtful questions.

The foundations of P4C are creative, critical, caring and collaborative thinking. 

By following the same structure in each session, children create their own philosophical questions and we start 'thinking about thinking'.  

Why include P4C in our curriculum?

Philosophy for Children has well-documented benefits across the curriculum. It is a very powerful way to promote understanding and has been proven to raise attainment as well as improve social and communication skills.

By learning though P4C, we hope to empower children to think philosophically and enrich them as learners and citizens of the world. We aim to create caring classrooms where children:

  • learn from and respect each other
  • listen to, value, accept and / or challenge opinions
  • develop their own views, opinions and values
  • have the opportunity to discuss areas of personal concern such as friendships, fairness and growing up as well as more general philosophical issues, such as change, free-will and truth. 

We strive to create an environment where children are encouraged to ask thoughtful questions and where they have the time to respond thoughtfully and critically.
